We have received official notice that the Forest Hills Neighborhood of Durham, North Carolina
was added to the distinguished "National Register of Historic Places" on December 28, 2005.
The following information may be useful to owners whose homes are in the designated "historic" area.
There is a tax advantage associated with this honor to encourage owners to maintain their properties. The tax advantage entitles residential owners a 30% state tax credit; owners of rental and commercial properties are entitled to a 20% state tax credit and a 20% federal tax credit. All renovations must be over $25,000.
The "National Register" does not infringe on the freedom of homeowners to make decisions regarding their property; however, if an owner wishes to be eligible for the tax advantages there are certain procedures that must be followed.
If you are planning a renovation over $25,000 and would like to apply for the tax credit, a plan must be submitted to the State Historic Preservation Office before the project is begun. Both interior and exterior projects are considered. For information on what projects are eligible and how to apply, contact Mitch Wilds, Predevelopment and Development Office, National Register of Cultural Resources, State Historic Office, (919) 733-6547; fax 715-4801, email: mitch.wilds@ncmail.net.
Thank you to all who have assisted in making this possible.
